A Tale Dark and Grimm, by Adam Gidwitz, is a book for anyone who likes fantasy, fiction, comedy and scary stories. It is the ‘real’ story of Hansel and Gretel. It it definitely different from the original tale, because it is bone-chilling, bloody and gruesome. This book is one of a series of three, A Tale Dark and Grimm, In a Glass Grimmly and The Grimm Conclusion. These books are great because they leave the reader wanting to know more.
A Tale Dark and Grimm starts out with a man named Johannes. Johannes is exceedingly loyal to the king and does everything in his power to protect him. When the king becomes obsessed with a cursed, beautiful woman, Johannes overhears the terrible things that will happen to the king if he marries this woman. This leads to a series of mishaps which includes a terrible fate for Johannes. The only way for Johannes to save himself is to harm the king’s children, Hansel and Gretel. The children end up okay, although once they find out what their parents were planning, they run away.
The book is about Hansel and Gretel’s adventures while looking for a new family. It includes their original story and some other unexpected journeys. It is a wild ride for the two siblings! Sometimes the author jumps into the narrative with humorous comments about the scenes. Read this book to find out what Hansel and Gretel go through during their quest.
