Olympic Skaters – from Greenwich

On February 9th, the Winter Olympics started this year in Pyeongchang. We know that the olympic events have passed, but there have been many outstanding American athletes performing in the ice dancing and skating competitions, including Nathan Chen, Alex Shibutani, and Maia Shibutani.  We want to share their talents with you!

Nathan Chen is a 18 year old who competed in figure skating for the United States of America. In the first competition he didn’t do well, but in the free dance he did very well. Nathan Chen was the first ever to attempt six quads in the free dance, setting a new record, and he even landed five of them. However, Nathan got 5th place, although he stayed in first for a while. Overall, he competed strongly and worked his hardest.

Alex and Maia Shibutani, also known as the Shib Sibs, are a sibling pair of ice dancers. Alex is 26 and Maia is 23. At the Winter Olympics 2014 in Sochi, they got eighth place and are working hard to beat that. They competed together and won a bronze medal for America in pair skating. They will keep working hard to reach their goal of receiving a gold medal. Many Americans hope to see them in the future. The Shibutani siblings actually grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut; Maia went to Greenwich Academy and Alex went to Brunswick! Then, they started homeschooling to practice their ice dancing more.

All of these amazing skaters have worked for a long time to be in the winter olympics. We hope to see them in 2022 and we will cheer them on as they represent our country!
