Odyssey of the Mind

Odyssey of the Mind is a competition between group of students who problem solve and then perform their idea while team building and being creative. Each season has a theme  and each team is given a list of problems that need solving. The teams get to choose what they want to do, and they can respond to the problem in whatever way they like. Then, they have to create props, scenery, and write a script to present their solution, all while making sure they do not go over budget. The more creative they are, the more points they get.

For this challenge, themed “fairytales”,  the group chose to solve a problem in a classic story with a modern twist: Alice in Wonderland. Alice did not like the Queen of Hearts’ Instagram post. To solve it, our group decided to have a crochet match to settle the argument. The Queen thought she won, but no one knew for sure, so they interviewed many people to try to figure out who won. Below are some interviews with some girls who participated in Odyssey of the Mind. They share their favorite parts, and some highlights of the competition.

Phoebe Zecca’s favorite parts of Odyssey of the Mind are the competition, and making the costumes. Phoebe says that her team was really nervous in the beginning, but the judges were very nice and her team ended up having a lot of fun.

Sophia Sigro says that when she had to work with people that she didn’t know very well, she got closer to them all and made new friends. She says that doing Odyssey of the Mind improved her teamwork skills. She also said that they had to go to Iowa, and she was very nervous, but in the end it went really well.

Camila Oliva loved making props and using the duct tape. She also enjoyed writing the script and working with her team.

After interviewing some of the girls who participated in Odyssey of the Mind, I noticed that they were all very happy to talk about their experience. Each of these participants had lots of fun during Odyssey of the Mind, and they say that it was an experience they will never forget. Teamwork makes the dream work!
