The Ghosts of Sacred Heart

by Kathleen Denvir, Moira Marangi, and Natasha Stewart

Have you ever heard about the Sacred Heart Ghost? Well, we have. We wanted to know more so we talked to Mr. Maida, Ms. Van Beuren, Mr. Allison, Mr.Favata, Mrs. Dunn, Ms. Scicilia, Mrs. Minafra, and Mrs. Rathkopf. Here is what we learned:

There are many different types of ghosts and at Sacred Heart they are mostly friendly. Many ghosts never left Sacred Heart, meaning the ghosts are the spirits of people who lived or died here.

Ms. Van Beauran and Mr. Allison and one other person all saw the same ghost. We interviewed them and they both had the same description of the ghost but when we told them this they were totally surprised, because they had never talked about the ghost sightings. When Ms. Van Beuran saw him, she was leaving the school for summer break one year. She went to her car but realized she forgot her keys, so she ran back to get them. When she walked in the lights were off and she saw a man in a flannel shirt, mostly gray and faint, walking past her to the construction site. It was a ghost, the old caretaker still taking care of the school. Mr. Allison saw the same spirit sitting at a desk on the third floor of the mansion, which some say is the most haunted floor of the school. His description matched the stories of two other people: it was bald and wearing a flannel shirt and glasses.

Mr. Allison has had many run ins with the spirits at Sacred Heart. He told us that it was very frustrating when guards would quit for no reason except that they were scared. He said that in the middle of the night, he would get phone calls from other security guards living on campus, asking if he was running in the hallway. He, of course, would answer no and that he was asleep and shared that most people believe the running in the hallway is the ghosts. They run from the mansion to the pool and back since these are the older part of the buildings and the areas the ghosts would have known during their lives.

One Fourth of July night, security guards were watching over the school, because they were too scared to be in the school alone. At the time, the school had just bought a new mirror, which was hung above the fireplace. That night, two security cameras turned off, but one stayed on. The one working security camera showed the new mirror in the mansion fall and break. But when the mirror fell, it didn’t leave a scratch on the walls. Even though it fell, the hinges were still secure and it seemed as if someone had lifted it off the wall and dropped it. But there was no one visible on camera.

Mrs. Rathkopf and Mr. Maida are among those who have witnessed ghostly activity. Over the summer, they were hosting an overnight camp and heard yelling from one of the rooms. At first, they assumed the students were playing a game and so they went in to tell them to go to sleep, but when they walked into the room they felt cold. The temperature had dropped by a large amount. They looked over to the window and the shades were going up and down – but no one was pulling them. A second later the shades stopped and the room went back to its normal temperature.

But are ghosts real? We decided to get another perspective on the ghosts so we talked to Mrs. Crowley, who told us that there may be ghosts. However, if ghosts do exist, they can’t be here to hurt us because God would never send an evil spirit down on us. Having said that, she does think ghosts are a fun thing to talk about!

Many teachers here have had experiences with ghosts and many are aware of the Sacred Heart ghosts. Not all the students are, however, so we hope you share this with your friends!
